Three Pieces for Solo Violinist's Arm

Performed by Julia Sandros-Alper, 2018

This piece was created as part of my FHS Composition portfolio at Oxford University and received a first class mark.

A phone is strapped to a violinist's wrist, sending the gyroscopic data of the movement of their bowing arm to a computer. This data is processed in a custom software (TiltFX) that I created using Max/MSP, allowing the parameters of effects on the violin audio to be controlled by the movements of the performer in real time.

This aims to create an extra expressive dimension to performance. It also makes the nature of the piece intrinsically visual for the audience.

The score and software manual can be accessed here. For a copy of the software and performance rights, please email.
